NASCAR第33戦アトランタ決勝レースは、カール・エドワーズが今シーズン7勝目を挙げ、ポイントランキングでも2位に浮上した。しかし、ランキングトップのジミー・ジョンソンも2位に入り、エドワーズとのポイント差を183まで広げた。
エドワーズは310ラップでのリスタートで3番手からトップのデニー・ハムリンを抜いてトップに立った。ジョンソンは、ピットレーンでの速度違反によるドライブスルー・ペナルティで一時は30位に落ちたものの、その後のピット戦略にも助けられ順位を挽回した。ゴール後、無線でジョンソンが2位に入ったことを聞かされたエドワーズは、悪い冗談だろうと思ったという。
ファン・モントーヤは、残り27ラップで5位にまで上った後、ピットレーンからスタートした際にクリント・ボウヤと接触、右フロントに大きなダメージを負って再度ピットイン、さらにレース終盤のジェフ・バートンとデイブ・ブラニーの接触が引き金となったマルチクラッシュに巻き込まれ40位に終わった。
残りのレースはわずかに3つ、たとえエドワーズが3連勝してもジョンソンが10位以上に入れば逆転はない。ジョンソンがよほどの失敗をしない限り3年連続のチャンピオン獲得が濃厚となってきた。
