■エドワーズ優勝も、ジョンソン3年連続チャンピオンに輝く

NASCARスプリントカップ最終戦ホームステッド決勝レースは、カール・エドワーズが今季9勝目を挙げた。しかし、ジミー・ジョンソンは30番手グリッドから着実に順位を上げ15位でフィニッシュし、2008年のシリーズチャンピオンに輝いた。ジョンソンはこれで3年連続のチャンピオンとなり、30年前にカール・ヤーボロウが達成した記録に並ぶ初のドライバーとなった。
エドワーズは優勝とともに267レースの157ラップをリードしベストを尽くしたものの、ジョンソンには69ポイント及ばずランキング2位となった。エドワーズは34戦テキサスでの勝利と同様に燃料を節約して最後のスティントを延ばし、最後はガス欠となって惰性でゴールした。一方のジョンソンは残り13ラップでピットイン、燃料補給とタイヤ交換を行って手堅くレースを終えた。
2位にはケビン・ハービック、3位にジェミー・マクマリー、4位にジェフ・ゴードンが入った。ゴードンは1993年のルーキー・シーズン以来の無勝利となった。ジョンソンは、チェイスレースに入っての10戦中、トップ10圏外でのフィニッシュが最終戦を含めて2回のみという抜群の安定度で栄冠を勝ち取った。ジョンソンがチェイスレースで獲得した賞金額は200万ドルをオーバーしている。対照的にチェイスまでランキングトップに立っていたカイル・ブッシュは、チェイスレースに入って失速し、結局ランキング10位に終わった。
その一方、シーズンが終わり各チームは週明けにも大規模な人員整理を行うものと見られており、その人数は合計約1,000人に及ぶと推測されている。
このレース2番手グリッドからスタートしたスコット・スピードは16位でフィニッシュ。No.84をドライブしたブライアン・ビッカーズは32位となり、レッドブル・チームはNo.83とNo.84の2台をオーナーポイト35位以内に送り込むことに成功した。また、34位フィニッシュのリーガン・スミスは今年のルーキー・オブ・ザ・イヤーを獲得、予選落ちしたサム・ホーニッシュJr.はそのタイトルを逃してしまった。
